Gallery ~ Periodicals
I've been lucky enough to work on periodical-design for various organizations... spanning from
Annual Reports to special-interest magazines, newsletters, and design of 96-page school yearbooks.
Developing an individual visual identity for a publication is a really fun challenge; and it's so satisfying to see these pieces utilized through time, conveying their message "out in the real world."

My favorite (so far) from among Annual Report booklets designed for the NM Blind School; photo-bar toward the bottom "flowed" from one page to the next, as a subtle nod to the school's "continuum of services." These are printed & mailed out, with a digital version published online.

Two more covers from Annual Report Booklets published in various years for the Blind School.
Redesign of Blind School's periodical, "InFocus"; shown here are the original (older) design; development of an updated logo-header; and final format.
After the redesign, various issues of the school's InFocus publication.
Early development-work on a proposed publication, which would be photo-heavy and reliant on quotes from students & staff. (Ultimately, the project morphed into the school's Annual Report instead of a stand-alone publication.)
Development of a publication centered around the school's ongoing partnerships & collaborations with various other organizations.
Weaving-themed graphics to underscore the interconnectivity of staff & programs at the school.
A booklet to celebrate the blind school's 105th anniversary! Content included historical photos, programmatic information, and interesting trivia about the school and its history. Several thousand glossy booklets were printed (offset vendor) and used for general promotion for years afterward.
Designed years' worth of the bi-annual "New Mexico Space Journal" (for the NM Space Museum); and years' worth of the monthly Arts Wrap publication (for Dona Ana County Arts Council, Las Cruces, NM.)
Design-development of a newsletter, highlighting collaborations with other organizations all across the state. Imagery centers around ideas of connectivity, dots hinting at braille usage, & "harvest" of ideas. (Shown here are various proposed headers, and the two final contenders.)
During the pandemic (no students on campus), yearbook-worthy photos were hard to come by.... These announcements were developed (a few per month) to encourage parents to email in photos of their students engaged in at-home learning and holiday fun.
16 years & counting.... Each year, the school's staff photographer and I build the school's 96-page yearbook -- combining my design with her fantastic photography. Each year, a new graphical theme is developed & utilized throughout the book (outsourced hard-cover printing.)

Each year, the school's yearbook incorporates a glossy area on the front & back covers; and I try to employ that strategically. For this particular year's cover, the gloss (areas shown in bright pink) was used to emphasize the giant paint goo running down the front of the fanciful "Galleria" building.
This year's book was themed as some sort of briefcase / time machine. The introductory spread was built to show a high-tech lab dabbling in time-travel. (Note self-referential yearbook cover incorporated in the art for the interior spread.)
This year's book was themed as a treasure-hunt. The introductory spread was built to show "Base Camp", the start of the adventure.
This year's book was themed as a comic book. The introductory spread was built to show a "hero" character confronting a "villain"... although they quickly end up being friends and working together to conquer challenges... shown through the rest of the book having many adventures right alongside the students.
This year's book was themed as a journey through space, with all staff & students cast in a role of passengers aboard a retro-cool spaceship. The intro spread was built to show the command-deck, with a note from the Superintendent "Captain." (Note self-referential yearbook cover in the art for the interior spread.)
When it was decided to offer a Yearbook Club to the blind school's students (many are partially-sighted), I wrote & designed a 70-page graphics-heavy "crash course" book to introduce to them the basic tenets of graphic design. Additionally shown here are the hype ads (built to match each year's secret book-theme) used in advance of the annual Yearbook-Signing Party.
